Abstract
This report summarizes and explains TCP/IP's many
security related details, without assuming that the reader has a technical
familiarity with network internals. We will not itemize the problems or
their solutions in this document, beyond an example or two.
Most of TCP/IP's security details can be handled without
sacrificing the communications connectivity that modern commerce demands
in a network. In fact, the worst of TCP/IP's weaknesses are also present
in every networking product, but other networks don't support the secure
redress that TCP/IP does. The industry's most effective network security
products were first built on TCP/IP networks. We emphasize that TCP/IP,
when properly deployed and administered, offers the best balance of openness
and security available today.
